We are a friendly, informal group established in 1994 with approximately 250 members. The area we cover surrounds Southend-on-Sea in south-east Essex and includes the Rochford and Castle Point districts, the Roach and Crouch estuaries and creeks with lengthy sea wall paths amid the abundant wildlife of the marshes. In the west of our area we have Thundersley and Benfleet with a variety of woodland areas and Hadleigh Castle Country Park, the castle made famous by John Constable. We extend in the south down to Canvey Island in the Thames estuary, in the east to Great Wakering and in the north to Rayleigh. Although the area is largely flat we nevertheless have some diverse scenery for the walker to enjoy.
The majority of walks we provide are in our local area though to extend the variety of walks we arrange some walks further afield. We have thematic walks - for example canal towpaths or walks with a historical flavour. We provide a programme of walks to suit everyone and also join up with other local groups to provide even more variety. The walks take place at the weekend and during the week and range from four miles upwards to 23 miles and most are moderately paced. Slower or brisk walks are indicated as such in our programme, which is issued every four months. Our current programme can be found at the link alongside.
It is not necessary to be a member to join in a walk - just turn up on the day. If you enjoy the walks and want to continue walking with us you are expected to join the Ramblers' Association to give us your support.
Many walks include a pub stop and cater for children and dogs, but please check with the walk leader before you go. You will need strong boots, shoes or trainers and warm and/or waterproof clothing, depending on the weather. But remember it can be very muddy particularly outside of the summer months and a walking-pole can be helpful, but remember to keep it pointed to the ground. You may also want to bring a drink and a snack or lunch. Come and join us in a walk you will be very welcome. Better still join us and become a Walk Leader.
